Disappoint I am .....
We got a good nights sleep after all of us passing out very early.
Local time get up was after 10am and after having a decent breakfast we caught a cab to the Old Quarter.
The cab ride was 25 minutes of laughter, and worth every penny of the AU$6. You will understand what I mean by it having been funny when you watch the clip later on this post.
The Old Quarter surrounds Hoan Kiem Lake -
- and it captures all the old charm of the area. There are individual streets dedicated to bags, shoes, womens fashions etc. etc. We did not complete the entire walking tour as there was a distinct, and semi understandable, lack of interest from one third of the participants.
Plus you get up close to some great stuff ......
This guy understand that the beer MUST get delivered!
"Yes sir, you need five 18er's for your afternoon drinks with a couple of mates?
No problems! I'll have them loaded onto my trusty 90cc transporter and delivered in no time."
We got about half way through it and Emma asked if we could go back to the department store that she saw on the way to the Old Quarter " ....which has the Louis Vuitton sign out the front.".
Yep, she was interested in the Old quarter as Ayatollah Khamenei is in attending Sunday service at a Baptist church in Atlanta. Get the picture?
We were a little thirsty and hungry so I suggested we go to the Highlands Coffee first. It's a place that Nic Jacka suggested when he kindly showed Georgia, Angus and I around Hanoi six years ago. It overlooks a quite busy intersection and the drink and food is both reasonable in flavour and price.
It doesn't cater for vegans though, so Emma restricted herself to a Coke.
After our snack we walked over to the TrangTien Plaza, which is a seriously high end shopping place.
Look what I saw on the way there ....
It's a scooter with a bit of off road work done to it.
Once we started looking around the plaza we found that, predictably, the prices were no different to home.
Five floors of Vuitton, Dior, BVLGARI, Kenzo etc. etc.
Emma was looking more bored than ever and she must have been hungry as all get out so we decided to head back to the apartment via the excellent Lotte food mart.
We stocked up all sorts of tucker including bread sticks, a cooked duck, some vegan friendly desserts and headed back to the comfort of our apartment.
Finally , a panorama shot from our balcony
and a clip that gives you an idea of the traffic
this only gives you a very brief and not that radical example of the traffic.
The scooter entering the frame from the top right hand corner at the very beginning has the entire family on board, including the missus and two little kids. This is not unusual nor is it extreme.
It's no wonder that when people that are used to driving here, and in this way, come to Australia they appear to be completely incompetent. It's unfortunate as I think we could learn a lot from the tolerant, laid back, no haste way of driving.

Highlands Coffee view looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteNic reckons "it's a bit long in the tooth" but I think it still OK for a sit down, a coffee and look down on the world.
ReplyDeleteI'm frothing this blog Marino but a few more Emma posts wouldn't go astray
ReplyDeleteEmma is sensitive about the pictures that include her, and that she approves of my publishing and what I'm allowed to say about her. Thus the sparsity of Emma-centric content.
